from santa rosa junior college to the sheriff's office. >>> time now 5:04. yesterday volunteers handed out permissionships so students could participate in the march but the district says the student who is do not attend school do so at their own risk. they say people are angry and the march is not a safe place for students. >>> time is now 5:05. the justice department targeting an apartment complex in fremont. ktvu's joining us live now to tell us about the federal lawsuit and how it involves child's play outside that apartment building. janine? >> reporter: dave, we're here at the woodland garden apartments. there's 37 units here and families live in some of them. but federal officials say that owners and staff here are not allowing children to play in a certain area and they're saying that's discrimination. now the u.s. department of justice has filed a lawsuit against the owners and operators of the woodland garden apartments alleging they discriminates against families with children. the suit says they prohibited kids from playing in the common grassy areas of the complex and that
. >>> we have new information about a stabbing late last night in santa rosa. it happened shortly before midnight outside of the internet cafe on guerneville road. police say a man and woman stabbed each other during a heated argument. both victims were taken to the hospital for medical treatment and are expected to survive. investigators believe the violence stemmed from a lover's spat. >>> today, the family of a santa rosa teenager fatally shot by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy will file a federal lawsuit against the county. the controversial shooting of andy lopez happened two weeks ago in santa rosa. the 13-year-old was shot and killed while carrying a toy gun that looked like an assault rifle. the civil rights lawsuit claims the sheriff's department encourages the use of deadly force even when there's no threat to public safety. now, the sheriff's department says this investigation is still in the early stages and says the lawsuit is premature. >>> the city of sunnyvale may be getting tougher gun control laws if voters pass a new measure tomorrow. it's a controversial issue. janin
. >> reporter: protesters marched through the streets of santa rosa meeting up with more demonstrators at santa rosa jr. college. now more than 1,000 people strong, the group demanded justice for andy and his family. >> not only did they let him reach his potential. they didn't let him turn around and say what was going on before they fired at eight times at him hitting him seven times. >> reporter: she marched with her 13-year-old son who was friends with the middle schooler. >> i'm worried thinking that could happen to him, the same thing that could happen to andy. that's what worries me like every day when i wake up. i worry when he goes to school. >> reporter: the demonstrators moved to the sheriff's department where they came face to face with deputies in riot gear. they hope to send a message. they want answers and will not stay quiet until they get them. >> i'm going to be out here fighting for change and praying to god it never happens to anyone again. >> sometimes the kid doesn't have a weapon. he wasn't threatening in any way. he may have made a turn in response to the statement. a st

shooting of a 13-year-old boy in santa rosa last month. sheriff deputy shot and killed 8 8th grader anthony lopez after mistaking the toy ak47 for a real rifle. the santa rosa man said the same deputy pulled a gun on him twice during a traffic highway stop. two months earlier, the man said the incident had him questioning the deputies emotional stability. the attorney declined to comment on the new allegation. lopez's family will file a lawsuit in federal court today against sonoma county citing excessive force. >>> the coast guard has released a statement about the mysterious barge on san francisco bay near treasure island that has been linked to google. a statement says coast guard personnel have been on board for routine inspections and to make sure compliance with applicable safety, security and environmental protection regulations. the coast guard did not say if the barge belonged to google. >>> it is 7:11. making sure b.a.r.t. trains keep running, what's happening today to confirm that will happen for at least four more years. >>> plus, who released disturbing videos of mentally ill p
